Meet the teacher: Jody E. Skinner

Just a brief hello from me before we dive into the course pieces. :)

[00:00:00] Hello, hello, my name is Jody Skinner and I want to take a second to introduce myself. I am a proofreader and a copy editor and I’ve been working with independent authors and publishers since 2017, and I’ve been doing book design and typeset work since 2018. In 2020, I got to join the author world myself when I wrote a book on how to use Vellum from the perspective of a PC user who added a Mac app to my workflow. So this was my first edition, and this is my second edition. And as I’m revising for third edition now I’m creating a course at the same time. 

[00:00:39] My goals are to connect people with the resources that they need to be successful in their book publishing process, and to ease some of the fear and the hesitation around all the different pieces that come at the end of the publishing process, whether that’s the technical pieces of formatting, whether that’s the upload process and some of that confusion. The manuscript’s finished. Now what do you do? 

[00:01:04] So it’s such a privilege to be part of the author and editor community where people are generous with their time and with their resources and the ways that they’re helping each other. I’m so glad to be part of that and to invite you along as well. 

[00:01:18] I kinda have a strange goal to try out all of the formatting programs that are available to indie authors and the people in their community. And my opinion is that the “right program” for any person is going to be what fits their project, what fits their budget, and is a program that they can learn how to use with confidence, whether that’s an author who wants to format their own book and be able to update their series in the future, or whether that’s a virtual assistant or a proofreader who wants to add services to help the indie author community.
