All students: Cloud storage / Dropbox and others
Cloud storage video coming soon
Apologies for the lack of a video as I troubleshoot some audio issues! In the meantime, here is a brief cloud storage walkthrough. (PC lessons coming next - hang with me!)
- Users on Mac already have cloud storage available through iCloud, but sometimes additional storage is helpful (if so, read on).
- Users on PC need to use a cloud storage option to access files from their PC and on MacinCloud, and to keep access to all their files even if they cancel access to MacinCloud.
Since many of us who work in Vellum have the best success with Dropbox, I'll talk you through that, but I'll link other options at the bottom.
First, Dropbox does have free accounts: If you aren't with Dropbox yet, you can sign up for a free 2GB of storage with Dropbox at Dropbox.com/basic with your current email address. This free tier isn't widely advertised, so use ^^ this link to go straight there.
Their free 2GB is more than enough storage if you mainly use it for Vellum files.
For Mac users: When you sign up, Dropbox will email you onboarding instructions with how to download their app to your computer. Follow those processes and you'll be set.
For PC/MacinCloud users: Dropbox is preinstalled on MacinCloud, so you will only have to find the app and sign in. If this description doesn't make sense yet, go through the following lessons and come back here when you're ready to connect.
- If you don't see the Dropbox icon in the Dock, go to the left side of the Dock and hover to find the Launchpad (usually second icon from left end).
- If you don't see Dropbox among the Launchpad icons that pop up, the top center of the Launchpad screen has a search bar. Start typing "Dropbox" and the rest of the icons will disappear.
- Open Dropbox and follow the prompts to sign in to your account.
PC users, make sure your files are saved from your computer to Dropbox, and make sure later that they're also saved there from the MacinCloud side.
If you already have a full drive with any trouble finding your files, it may be helpful to create a new folder only for the files you need on both ends, and name the folder something where it will show up at the top of your list of files.
You're set! Let's make that book!!

Cloud storage alternatives that have anecdotally been more glitchy with Vellum files but are fine if they suit you better:
- Microsoft OneDrive: OneDrive is also preinstalled on MacinCloud. Visiting signup.live.com gives you 5GB free storage when you sign up with your existing email or create a new Outlook or Hotmail email account with them.
- Google Drive: https://accounts.google.com/signup gives you 15GB of free storage for personal accounts. (They don't care if you're using a "personal" account for a business—it's just what bells and whistles they'll invite you to pay for. Free/personal is fine.) You can use your current email address or create a new email address when you follow the prompts.
